With a charming mix of old meets new, Dunbar is close to some of the best schools in the city, classic 18 hole golf tracks, and ensconced in Vancouver’s always in demand west side. Dunbar is neighbours to Kerrisdale, West Point Grey & the Southlands, in addition, the neighbourhood is well known for English Arts & Crafts and Edwardian styled homes. Adjacent to Pacific Spirit Park and the University of British Columbia (UBC), Dunbar is one of the best neighbourhoods in one of the world’s finest cities.


Schools

One of the main reasons families look to the Dunbar neighbourhood is its excellent proximity to some of the finest elementary, secondary and private schools in the province. As part of Vancouver School Board #39, Dunbar elementary schools include Lord Kitchener and Queen Elizabeth both K – 7 with Queen Elizabeth Annex offering K – 3. Just north of the Dunbar neighbourhood Jules Quesnel Elementary offers K – 7 classes. For high school students in the catchment, Lord Byng Secondary has grades from 8 to 12. For the finest in university prep and schools highly ranked by the Fraser Institute, private schools nearby include St. George’s for boys, York House, Crofton House & Little Flower Academy for girls, plus Vancouver College, home of Vancouver’s famous Fighting Irish sports teams. A short drive away along 16th Avenue or Marine Drive is UBC – placing in the top 50 globally in the 2023 QS World University Rankings.

Location & History

The Dunbar neighbourhood of Vancouver on the west side is located with the UBC Endowment Lands and the 750 hectare Pacific Spirit Regional Park to the west. Dunbar is situated with 41st Avenue to the south, Camosun Street to the west, 16th Avenue to the north and Blenheim transitioning to Quesnel Street forming the community’s border to the east. The area was originally settled by Scottish immigrants in the early part of the 20th century. Following extensive logging and the arrival of a streetcar in the 1920s, homes began to be built.


Recreation

For dog owners, nature lovers and those looking to escape where it’s green and serene, Pacific Spirit Regional Park on the western edge of Dunbar is the crown jewel of local green spaces. Valdez Park in the neighbourhood offers an off-leash space for dogs, while Chaldecott Park is home to twin baseball diamonds, water spray park & two soccer pitches. For indoor recreation, Dunbar Community Centre offers a dance studio, indoor cycling, fitness centre, sauna, whirlpool & squash courts. The Dunbar Vancouver Public Library offers community computers, printing & copying, free WiFi and in-house Chinese Language Collection for all ages. For golfers in the family, Dunbar is minutes away from McCleery, Shaughnessy, Point Grey & Musqueam golf courses.


Shopping & Restaurants

For local residents, the shops and services along Dunbar Avenue are some of the finest in the city. Topping the list for local foodies is Stong’s Market – a Vancouver destination for fresh produce, meat & groceries since 1955. H-Mart is a Korean grocery store featuring Asian foods, housewares & ready-to-serve meals. One of the most iconic buildings in the Dunbar Village is the Dunbar Theatre, in operation since 1935. Built in an Art Deco style, it’s a historic Vancouver venue. For hardware, banking, pharmacies or medical offices, the Dunbar Village Associates has nearly 250 shops and services. Be it eating in, take-out or quick delivery, local restaurants include pizza, sushi, coffee haunts and more. La Notte Restaurant is a neighbourhood favourite for Tuscan-style pasta, and Butter Bakery famous for home-style cakes, cookies & fresh baked pies. Transportation

Conveniently located on Vancouver’s west side, the Dunbar neighbourhood offers easy vehicle access to Vancouver International Airport, UBC and the downtown business district in less than 20 minutes. By transit, Dunbar has frequent local bus service connecting to the Canada Line along 41st Avenue, and to Arbutus Station a planned underground station on the Millennium Line, part of the Broadway Subway Project.
