A picturesque waterfront locale…

Location & History

The False Creek neighbourhood in Vancouver is all about the best in location in the heart of a west coast city. Celebrated as a new community along Vancouver’s inner waterfront, the area includes Granville Island, the Seaforth Amoury, the traditional Molson Breweries site, and the urban charm of the Olympic Village, built for the 2010 Winter Olympic Games. Two famous landmarks include the Telus World of Science at the eastern boundary with the iconic and restored art deco Burrard Bridge on the western boundary. A picturesque waterfront locale, False Creek is the northern border of the neighbourhood, with Quebec Street as the border to the east, West 6th Avenue beginning at 4th Avenue and ending with West 2nd Avenue at the Cambie Bridge underpass as its southern boundary, and finishing with Burrard Street as False Creek’s western border.

Early explorers in the 19th century thought they were going up a creek, and when they realized they were wrong, they named this body of water “False Creek”. False Creek was once an industrial site with sawmills, docks for large ships & rail yards. The name originated from George Henry Richards during his hydrographic survey of 1856 – 63. In the transformative 1960s, a UBC geography professor envisioned the transformation of this site from industrial into a mixed use waterfront community. In fact, False Creek represents a new architectural and planning term called “Vancouverism” – characterized by a large residential population living in the centre of the city with mixed use developments. The father of Vancouverism is Larry Beasley – who joined the City of Vancouver as a planner in 1976. Today cities as diverse as Abu Dhabi and Moscow have used the Vancouver model as inspiration.

Housing

Representative of some of the finest urban lifestyles in North America, the False Creek neighbourhood in Vancouver is composed mostly of townhomes in multiple styles, mid-rise condominiums and luxury condo towers in the Olympic Village community. Single detached units are few and far between in the neighbourhood. Today up to 80 percent of the False Creek land is owned by the City of Vancouver, and is made available to homeowners by leasehold and freehold through a Property Endowment Fund. Buyers will discover many of the modern condos in False Creek include fitness centres, swimming pools & concierge services. With its popular waterfront locale, stunning sunsets and outstanding views of downtown and the North Shore only add to False Creek’s appeal. With an eye to affordability, both the City of Vancouver and province of British Columbia are planning for more density in the neighbourhood. Keeping in mind the original vision of the area in the 1970s was to have a mixed community of one-third low income, one-third middle income and one-third high income.

Recreation

The seawall along False Creek is where you’ll see the best of Vancouver of full display: Locals strolling the family dog, fitness types walking and running, the city’s cycling community out and about, and next level urban commuters on e-scooters and skateboards. In addition, the world famous destination is home to design shops, art studios and craft brewery & distillers.
