Elegance, stately homes, tree-lined streets, large manicured lots… these are characteristics that define the Southwest Marine neighbourhood.
In an area that is 99% residential, it stands to reason that there is a plethora of nearby educational institutions.
Contained in the narrow boundaries of SW Marine is McKechnie Elementary and Maple Grove Elementary. David Lloyd Elementary and Sir Wilfred Laurier Elementary are just outside the borders. A short distance away, Magee Secondary School offers education to the older children in the family. As an alternative, the private and independent institutions such as the Vancouver Montessori School, Glen Eden School are also a part of the small confine defined as SW Marine. Within easy driving distances are other private institutions such as the Vancouver Hebrew Academy and Crofton House.
The neighbourhood is bordered by 49th Avenue to the north, West Boulevard to 64th Avenue with a jog over to Granville Street on the east, continuing down to 70th Avenue that turns into the western boundary of SW Marine Drive. SW Marine is an oddly secluded yet accessible area of the Vancouver’s Westside. Elegant tree-lined streets and boulevards earmark this quiet enclave of Vancouver.
…uniqueness and elegance of an earlier time
The homes and properties in SW Marine can be described in two words: stately and elegant. For the most part the area is dotted with single-family dwellings on large lots. Manicured lawns, large stately trees and good-sized lots are the norm in this area. Most of the dwellings were built pre-1946 and exhibit the uniqueness and elegance of an earlier time. Some of Vancouver’s most iconic homes – including Casa Mia – can be glimpsed while taking a drive down SW Marine Drive.
Green space abounds in this area. The tree-lined streets and boulevards make for excellent walking areas. There are three beautiful parks dotted throughout the neighbourhood including: Riverview Park, Arbutus Park and Maple Grove Park. These all offer facilities and services for joggers, dog walkers and recreational sports enthusiasts.
The close-by Marpole Community Centre caters to more of the indoor recreational facilities and offers many popular and varied programs and courses for all the residents of the surrounding area.
Southwest Marine also borders on two of the most beautiful golf courses in the Lower Mainland. McCleary Golf course on the Fraser River is a city run course while the Marine Drive Golf Club, also nestled up against the banks of the Fraser, is one of the oldest and most prestigious private golf clubs in the lower mainland.
SW Marine does not contain any large commercial shopping areas within its boundaries. However, its proximity is well served on the eastern border by the neighbouring retail shopping district at 70th Avenue and Granville which offers everything from a major grocery store, liquor store and gas stations to local neighbourhood merchants. Just across the northern border lies the area at 41st and Arbutus offering more unique neighbourhood shops, restaurants and coffee shops. Shopping and commercial enterprises such as banking, insurance offices, doctors and dentists are easily accessible from this area.
SW Marine is unique in another way. While it is itself a quiet enclave of understated elegance, it is transected by SW Marine Drive, one of the major routes for university students, faculty and visitors wishing to travel from any of the outlying areas to the University of British Columbia.
Because of the demographics of the area most travel is done by the car. Easy access to SW Marine Drive gives residents a main thoroughfare from west to eastern areas. Proximity to Granville Street gives north south access to the downtown core (north) and the Vancouver International Airport, Richmond and all southern areas of the Lower Mainland.
SW Marine is well served by public transportation. The bus system offers convenient stops and frequent direct service to downtown and its environs.
