Home to a distinct and diverse urban population, South Vancouver is one of the most ethnically diverse neighbourhoods in Vancouver with an immigrant population of over 60 percent. The Punjabi Market on Main Street has unique independent grocers, textile shops and restaurants to add to Vancouver’s multicultural mix. South Vancouver, also known as Sunset, is where culture, commerce and community combine to make it more popular than ever for so many Vancouver families.
The Vancouver School Board has a total four elementary schools nearby including John Henderson Elementary and Annex, Walter Moberly and Pierre Elliot Trudeau Elementary School. High schools close to the South Vancouver area include David Thompson Secondary on 55th Avenue and John Oliver Secondary on 41st Avenue.
Located south of 49th Avenue and east of Marpole, the South Vancouver neighbourhood is situated with Knight Street to the east, industrial Kent Avenue and the Fraser River to the South, Ontario Street to the west and 49th Avenue to the north.
With traditional roots as a working class neighbourhood, South Vancouver has mostly single family homes sprinkled with low-rise walk-up apartments, and a few newer condominiums. Many homes in the area feature small backyards and the community has numerous houses from the 1970s and ‘80s built tightly to zoning requirements and known as the “Vancouver Special”. Some properties offer magnificent southern views of mountains and the Fraser River.
Sunset Community Centre and the Sunset Ice Rink are two prime City recreation facilities in the neighbourhood to serve residents of all ages. The community centre features a state-of-the art fitness centre, outdoor pool, multiple meeting rooms, gymnasium, youth centre and pre-school. The ice arena is open all year and offers a wide variety of public skating and skate lessons for all ages. South Vancouver residents also enjoy easy access to Langara Golf Course, operated by the Vancouver Parks Board. In addition, $3 million dollars has been recently earmarked to upgrade Sunset Park with new pathways, a playground, skateboarding and outdoor basketball facility.
The Punjabi Market is one of the most vibrant shopping and dining districts in the city and is right in the heart of South Vancouver. This major Indo-Canadian business and cultural centre occupies six full blocks on Main Street, starting at East 49th Avenue. Vancouver’s Little India is marked by shops sporting bold swathes of silk, intricate gold bangles and some of the finest & affordable curries outside of the Punjab. A good selection of shops and services are located north and south of Fraser Street at 49th Avenue with banks, pharmacies and fresh vegetable markets. Excellent retail can also be found along Marine Drive in South Vancouver with brand name warehouse stores and a Real Canadian Superstore.
With Main and Fraser streets running through South Vancouver, this neighbourhood offers quick access to points north & south by Translink bus service or private vehicle. For convenience, Vancouver International Airport is just minutes away along Marine Drive. The City of Richmond, Highway 99 to the US Border and the East/West Connector are just a short drive from South Vancouver.
